#1947 Mamluk carpets are recognized by their fine weave, repeating geometric patterns, and use of one or more medallions. The exception is the Chessboard Mamluk design, which uses repeating patterns without a center medallion. (It seems with rugs there is always an exception to almost every rule.) Mamluk's often remind me of intricate mosaic, or tile work. Despite their complexity, the best Mamluk carpets have a soothing quality about them. They are detailed, but not stiff. The Simonetti Mamluk carpet is a beautiful antique example of the style.
